The Gozo General Hospital finally has it first gynaecology ward that should facilitate the lives of women requiring specialised care there.
The ward, opened yesterday by Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono, forms part of an intensive modernisation project of the maternity ward and the doctors' quarters - a venture that cost about Lm80,000.
The gynaecology ward, which has a separate entrance but with direct access to the maternity ward, was created after an exercise of better space utilisation by the ministry, with the help of the hospital's administration. It can accommodate up to 10 patients in air-conditioned rooms.
Meanwhile, the maternity ward has been revamped to accept a maximum of 12 patients and the doctors' quarters modernised to provide a comfortable refuge for doctors and visiting medics.
The project involved replacing the old service pipes, changing the asbestos soffit and the entire electrical system.
Both the maternity and gynaecology wards have been equipped with a computer, television and telephone network as well as an electronic nurse call system.
Ms Debono said that Gozo's hospital was constantly improving to provide superior services. The government was committed to constantly upgrading its medical services and it was presently working to completely change the hospital's catering system.
