A fisherman was charged with beating his former girlfriend with a crash helmet in an alleged fit of rage following their separation.

The 37-year-old from Cospicua was accused of slightly injuring the woman in the same town last Friday and also threatening her with SMS messages in the previous days.

The two had been together for three years but the relationship ended recently.

Police Inspector Fabian Fleri, prosecuting, told the court the two had had an argument and the woman went to live with a friend in Birkirkara.

The accused, who had a possessive character, sent her threatening text messages and tried calling her. He even went to her friend's house before the incident occurred on Friday.

Defence lawyer Manwel Mallia asked for bail and said the accused had since made up with his wife, whom he had also separated from, and was willing to live with her and his 17-year-old son.

The accused was also ready to accept house arrest despite his demanding job and would not use a mobile phone.

Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima however noted that the proceedings were still at an early stage and the accused could therefore influence the witnesses.

The accused was remanded in custody.
