Three Egyptian fishermen, including the captain of a fishing vessel, were yesterday charged with trafficking in human beings when they assisted immigrants in entering Malta illegally on Sunday.

Boat captain Hassan Mabruk, 27, his assistant Wagdi Abdel Gawad, 26, and 25-year-old mechanic Tamer Ibrahim Attia pleaded not guilty to conspiring to traffic in people.

Magistrate Antonio Mizzi remanded the three men in police custody.

Police Inspector Mario Haber prosecuted.

Dr Richard Sladden appeared for the three men.
