Six people, including four children and a baby just four months old, were rushed to hospital on Friday afternoon following a crash on Labour Avenue in Żabbar.

The police said on Saturday that four cars - a Volvo XC60, a Volkswagen Polo, Toyota Ist and Renault Captur - were involved in the 5pm crash, which eyewitnesses described as "chaotic".

Initial reports were that just three cars were involved.

A 54-year-old man from Żabbar in the Polo's driver seat required help from the Civil Protection Department to be extracted from the vehicle. He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital following the crash.

His four passengers, two children aged four, a nine-year-old and 11-year-old, were also taken to hospital for treatment.

One of the four-year-olds, a boy, was grievously injured. The other children had their injuries classified as slight.

Police said the Polo was parked at the time of the crash.

Inside the Toyota Ist was 18-year-old man from Attard driving the car, a 20-year-old woman from Cospicua in the passenger seat and a four-month-old baby.

Medics took the driver and infant to hospital. Both were slightly injured.

The Volvo driver - a 54-year-old man from Mosta - was not hurt. The Renault Captur was parked and empty at the time of the crash but sustained damage.

Another five pedestrians and a motorcyclist were injured in separate accidents on Friday in a dark day on Malta's roads.
