An appeal has been made to the government to clear details about the trapping season which should open within a week and declare the opening of the season, the hunters and trappers' federation said.

In a statement, the FKNK said that it was convinced, especially following personal discussions and correspondence with senior European Commission officials, that the commission was willing to listen and consider Malta's specific situation and if it felt that the reasons for the opening of the season were valid it would not oppose the application of a derogation.

The government, the FKNK said, held the key and it should use this in the best interest of Maltese and Gozitan citizens.

The FKNK also thanked Labour MP Joe Mizzi for his parliamentary questions to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi about the issue.

The Prime Minister's replies, however, raised further questions including what had the government been doing, since 2009, on the European Commission's request for further information.

The Prime Minister also did not say why it had accepted licence payments since 2009 but, at the same time, ignored the commission.
