The hunters' federation (FKNK) has hit out at the PN's reaction to the petition it presented last week seeking amendments to the Referenda Act 'to protect the rights of minorities'.

The petition carried 104,293 signatures, making it a petition which could not be ignored by Malta's MPs, the federation said.

It regretted that the Opposition had turned down its invitation to send one of its MPs to receive the petition along with a government MP. As a result, it said, a large number of its members felt abandoned.

The FKNK noted that PN deputy leader Beppe Fenech Adami later said that the PN disagreed with the petition and agreed and felt there should not be any restrictions on the holding of a referendum to ban spring hunting. Thus, the federation said, the PN was not prepared to do anything to safeguard the right of minorities, such as the hunters.

It noted that the PN environment spokesman, Charlo' Bonnici, had said the wishes of the 40,000 who had signed the petition calling for the spring hunting referendum could not be ignored.

So how could a petition carrying 104,293 be ignored?

The federation asked whether it could have been former PN leader Lawrence Gonzi who actually kick started the referendum proposal  when he said on TimesTalk that he was prepared to organise such a referendum?
