Recently the mayor of Birkirkara was on air replying to questions by the residents of Birkirkara and Fleur-de-Lys.

When I finally managed to get through, I asked the mayor, Doris Borg, why she ignored the wishes of the residents of Fleur-de-Lys to elect the chairman of the committee from our locality when she knows quite well that a democratic vote was taken and approved by the committee before the last local elections.

Her reply was that according to the local council rules the chairman of a hamlet had to be a councillor. Right, I agree.

Well, we do have a councillor from Fleur-de-Lys, Emmanuel Farrugia (whom I know personally as an honest and hard working person).

My suggestion to the mayor is to respect the wishes of the residents and appoint Mr Farrugia as the new chairman of our hamlet.
