Flip-flops: The quintessential summer accessory. But how about using the summery slip-ons as decorations, the Christmas-kind nonetheless?
Well, that’s exactly what visual artist Sue Mifsud has done. Bubbling with imagination and creativity, many might know Sue from Patches: The Special Market or might have visited one or more of her exhibitions.
A more-than-able ceramist, she is however always searching for new channels through which to vent her creativity, and hanging flip-flops on her Christmas tree is probably the most recent of her quirky installations.
More than a tad curious when viewing the images she posted on Facebook, I give her a quick buzz and she recounts her tale:
“Every year I resist putting up Christmas decorations and it's only through my husband’s insistence that they eventually make an appearance. After analysing my reluctance to decorate, I think my reason is that the run-of-the-mill decorations don’t inspire me.
To retain marital bliss I was this year motivated to make my own. I love the idea of juxtaposition of objects or concepts and having a bag full of old, loyal flip-flops, my medium was at hand. Sprayed chrome silver, sparking gold and metallic red, while suspended from red ribbon, my summer essentials now have renewed purpose out of season, hanging from our Christmas tree, and my husband is somewhat happier this festive season.”
