For yet another year, as she has been doing for more than half a century, Margot Bonello, AM, QSM, last Thursday laid flowers on all the 25 ANZAC graves at Kalkara Cemetery. This volunteer endeavour, undertaken selflessly with great sacrifice, has been executed largely on her own steam since the departure of the British Services in 1979. Before then she would have had the assistance of the Admiralty.
Joining her in saying prayers were Dr Angela Hopkins, consular manager, Australian High Commission, since the Australian High Commissioner was unavoidably absent, and John Mizzi, John Agius, MBE, and Alex Randon of the War Museum Association.
Ms Bonello laid flowers on the graves of the 32 airmen from the UK, Australia and New Zealand, including an unknown serviceman.
