On the eve of the first open day held at the Institute of Information & Communication Technology at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST), an FOI delegation visited the ICT Institute and held a meeting with its director, Juan Borg Manduca.

The main purpose of the visit was for the FOI officials to be introduced to what the institute is achieving and the programmes it offers its 600 students.

The FOI officials, vice-president Ian Mizzi, Human Resources & Social Policy Working Group chairman C. Stephen Debono, director general Wilfred Kenely, as well as executives Cecilia Vella and Dr Ingrid Buhagiar, were impressed at the great opportunities available within this institute for students to further their education in the ICT field.

Mr Borg Manduca explained that the institute offers courses ranging from an MCAST Foundation Certificate in Computing (one-year full-time duration), an MCAST/BTEC First Diploma for IT Practitioners (one-year full-time), an MCAST/BTEC National Diploma in Computing (two years full-time programme) and an MCAST/BTEC High National Diploma in Computing (two years full-time programme).

The entry criteria varies depending on the level of the certificate/diploma. The objective of this institute is that at the end of their respective courses, the students would have become equipped with the right hardware, networking, Web and software development skills to be able to work in the ICT sector or other sectors requiring IT specialists.

During the meeting the possibility of further collaboration between the institute, the FOI and industry in general was discussed.
