Italian Serie B side Messina are on the verge of dropping out of the division because of financial problems, the club website said.

The Sicilians had been warned of their position last week and the Franza family, who own the club, took time to look at the books.

However, reports said they have now decided not to appeal against the decision, as they cannot provide the certification of paid wages and other debts.

It would have taken just under £3m to save Messina's place in Serie B. Unless a new consortium presents a request to buy the club by the end of this month, Messina will not even be allowed to begin again from Serie C2 and would stop functioning as a club.

Werder refuse to release Diego

Playmaker Diego will not be released for the Olympics even though the 23-year-old was named in the Brazil squad last week, Werder Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs said.

Allofs said the reason for the refusal is that the Olympics are not part of FIFA's official schedule.

"There is at the moment no legal foundation that says the clubs have to release their players. So I'm not expecting any reaction from FIFA," he said. "We made it clear to him (Diego) that we are not going to release him due to the legal situation."

Diego said: "Obviously I'd like to take part in the Olympics. It's a dream of mine. But Werder won't release me."

Samaras signs Celtic deal

Georgios Samaras has left Manchester City to sign a three-year deal with Scottish champions Celtic following a loan spell last season.

"I wanted to stay here, Celtic wanted to keep me here and both sides are happy with this transfer," Samaras told Celtic's website.

City bought Samaras from Dutch side Heerenveen for £6m in 2006 and have made a substantial loss in offloading the Greek international.

Samaras scored six goals for Celtic last season, although he failed to break up the first-choice strike partnership of Scott McDonald and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

Treviso player dies in car crash

Gionata Mingozzi, a 23-year-old midfielder with Italian Serie B side Treviso, has died after a crash in his Porsche and with a lorry near Venice, the club website said.

The crash took place at around 8 a.m. as the 23-year-old was on his way to undergo a medical ahead of pre-season training in Austria.

"It is with the deepest sorrow that we will mourn with his family, friends and all who have had the privilege of knowing him during his tragically short life," a statement read.

Mingozzi was co-owned by Sampdoria and made his Serie A debut with the Blucerchiati before spending the last two years with Lecce and Treviso in Serie B.

Mayor apology to Donadoni

The mayor of a southern Italian town has apologised to former national team coach Roberto Donadoni (picture), who had a bucket of water thrown over him by an unknown assailant at a restaurant last week.

Lello Di Bari, the mayor of Fasano, told reporters the act was "certainly not civil".

Donadoni lost his job after the lacklustre world champions were beaten on penalties by eventual winners Spain in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals last month.

World Cup-winning coach Marcello Lippi has returned to replace him.

Villa table offer for Bentley

Aston Villa have tabled an offer for Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Bentley. The England international, 23, did not play in Blackburn's pre-season victory at Macclesfield on Monday because of a calf problem picked up in training.

Bentley has made it clear that he wants to leave Blackburn and has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

"We have had an offer from Aston Villa but I do not want him to go," Blackburn manager Paul Ince said.

Bentley's current deal runs until 2011. He could cost in the region of £17m if Blackburn decide to part with their player.

Juventus give up on Alonso, Stankovic

Juventus have said attempts to buy Liverpool's Xabi Alonso and Inter's Dejan Stankovic are over after their purchase of Sevilla midfielder Christian Poulsen on Monday.

"We will not make any other buys. We have opted for the Dane because we have a very strong attack and needed a wall in the midfield," Juve chairman Giovanni Cobolli Gigli told reporters.

Juve's main addition to the squad was Palermo striker Amauri, but they have also swooped for Livorno defender Dario Knezevic and Aston Villa's Olof Mellberg.

"Everyone knows that the market doesn't close until August 30, but unless something extraordinary happens we have finished our activity," Cobolli Gigli told reporters.
