Chelsea defender Jose Bosingwa has escaped punishment for a karate style kick on Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun during the 2-0 defeat at Anfield on Sunday, the FA said.

The Portuguese player blatantly kicked Benayoun in the back when the Liverpool player was shielding the ball near the corner flag in stoppage time.

"Referee Mike Riley has informed the FA that, while he did not see the incident himself, it was seen by his assistant Mo Matadar. No action was taken against Bosingwa by the officials," the FA said.

Under FIFA laws, the FA could have only punished Bosingwa if the incident had not been spotted by the match officials.

Beckham wants to stay - Galliani

David Beckham wants to stay at Milan after his loan from Los Angeles Galaxy finishes on March 9, the Serie A club's chief executive, Adriano Galliani, said.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who has been in fine form for Milan, moved to Italy during the long US close season on a two-month loan deal to try to stay in the frame for a place in the England side.

Galaxy have insisted Beckham return in March but he has said he is torn.

"We are working to keep him and I think he would like that too," Galliani said.

"Milan will do everything to have Beckham even after March. It is clear that it's our wish to have him until the end of the season or on a permanent deal."

Chiellini back for Chelsea clash

Juventus defender Giorgio Chiellini should return from a thigh problem in time for this month's Champions League last 16 first leg match at Chelsea, the Serie A club said.

The Italy international, voted Serie A's top defender in 2008 by his fellow professionals, suffered the injury in Saturday's 3-2 home defeat by Cagliari.

"The prognosis is for him to return to action in 15-20 days, therefore Giorgio should be ready just in time for the first leg with Chelsea (on Feb. 25)," a club statement read.

Midfielder Cristiano Zanetti, who has just come back from injury, has been less fortunate and will be out for two months with a fresh hamstring problem.

Panucci decides to stay at Roma

Roma defender Christian Panucci, 35, has failed to clinch a transfer window move having said he wanted to leave the club last week after falling out with coach Luciano Spalletti, his agent told Italian media.

"Unfortunately, it has not gone how we wanted and Panucci has decided to stay at Roma and make himself available, even if after eight years he will not be in the Champions League squad," Oscar Damiani said.

England's Hull City had been among the clubs linked in the media with the former Italy international.

Butt extends Newcastle contract

Nicky Butt has extended his stay at struggling Premier League club Newcastle United by another year after signing a new contract yesterday.

Butt's current contract was due to expire in the summer, but the Magpies have tied him down for a further 12 months.

Butt, formerly of Manchester United, has established himself as a key member of the Newcastle side in recent years after a slow start to his career at St James' Park.

He joins Steve Harper and Shola Ameobi in signing new contracts at Newcastle.

The news is a boost for manager Joe Kinnear as he looks to steer the side clear of trouble at the wrong end of the table.

Defoe ruled out for 10 weeks

Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe has been ruled out for up to 10 weeks after scans revealed a stress fracture in his right foot.

The news ended a bitter-sweet day for the struggling Premier League side who on Monday re-signed Ireland forward Robbie Keane from Liverpool.

The news is a terrible blow for Defoe who will miss out for the third time in a year on a Wembley showpiece with Spurs due to face Manchester United in the League Cup final on March 1.

Last season Defoe signed for Portsmouth shortly before Tottenham beat Chelsea in the League Cup final and he was ineligible for Portsmouth's FA Cup final win over Cardiff because he had played in an earlier round for Spurs.

Dunga accepts Juventus decision

Carlos Dunga, the Brazil national coach, had to accept the decision by Juventus not to release their striker Amauri for the friendly against Italy at the Emirates Stadium on February 10.

"Amauri has let us know that Juventus haven't allowed him to play," a statement from the Brazil football federation said.

"The coach of the Brazil team has decided not to call another player to play against Italy.

"Amauri never received any provisional call-up and Juve's position remains the same as it was before their game against Cagliari."

Amauri's international future has been the subject of immense speculation as he will soon be eligible to play for Italy, as well as his native Brazil.
