A former governor of the Central Bank of Malta, John Earland, has donated $10,000 for the establishment of a fund to finance the award of an annual prize for the best essay or academic result related to the financial markets discipline.

An agreement to establish the John Earland Prize Fund was signed between Mr Earland and David A. Pullicino, the Central Bank's deputy governor.

The purpose of the award is to enhance awareness of issues relating to the financial markets and to encourage the upgrading of skills and knowledge in this area.

A prize of Lm200 will be awarded annually, as of this year, for the best result obtained in the certificate/diploma examinations of the Financial Markets Association (ACI), the Certificate for Financial Advisors (CEFA) examinations of the Institute of Financial Services (IFS) or in examinations of other academic bodies as may be determined by the bank.

In the event that nobody is successful in these examinations, the prize will be awarded for the best essay submitted in an ad hoc competition organised by the bank during the same year on a theme related to the foreign exchange, money and capital markets in Malta.

The winner will be decided by an adjudicating panel appointed by the bank.
