Former Enemalta CEO, Residency Malta head Jonathan Cardona dies

He died following a battle with cancer

Jonathan Cardona, former Enemalta CEO and head of the Residency Malta agency, has died after a battle with cancer.

Prime Minister Robert Abela and his predecessor Joseph Muscat broke the news of his death through a social media post.

Abela said he received the difficult news of his death during the swearing-in of the new cabinet on Thursday.

"Even though we were aware of the health problems he faced in recent months, this is a moment of great shock for all of us," Abela said.

He added that Cardona was "instrumental" in his behind-the-scenes work in helping Labour win the 2013 election.

The prime minister recalled Cardona's seriousness and loyalty in every role he was tasked with.

Muscat paid tribute to his friend, saying Cardona's death was heartbreaking.

"Jonathan was one of the original team members who together began preparing the PL for government in 2008. After 2013, he was Chief of Staff to Louis Grech and served as my envoy to the European Council.

"He was the person who took care of and led with integrity the Citizenship by Investment Programme through which much good is being done and our country has kept going during the pandemic."

Muscat said that although thousands of families and businesses do not know him, Cardona had done a lot of good for the country.

Cardona was appointed CEO of Enemalta in October 2021 before resigning two years later.
