Former MP who fits Presidential bill

Though the term of office of the President has still some time to run, suggestions and, in some instances names, are already being put forward.

It has been suggested that the appointee should not have a political background; I disagree. Apart from his ceremonial duties the President has to rub shoulders continually with political figures, local and foreign. Many times he has to navigate deftly in our political waters be they blue, red or green and therefore some political baggage is an asset and not a liability.

The important thing is that he is able to command the acceptance, and the respect, of the whole political spectrum. In my opinion a person who fits this bill is Lino Spiteri. I will not waste time by extolling his virtues, as these are known by all. My only apprehension is that after reading this he may not continue to count me as an old professional friend!
