Former referee Urs Meier has urged UEFA to hurt Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho by banning him from the touchline for next month's Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich.

"A penalty has to hurt," Meier, who retired at the end of last year, told Stern magazine in an interview published yesterday.

"If Mourinho got a suspension and was not allowed to sit on the bench in the quarter-final against Bayern, that would hurt."

Chelsea host Bayern Munich in the first leg of the quarter-final on April 6, with the return in Germany on April 12.

"For about the last year players, trainers and clubs have been testing the boundaries," said Switzerland's Meier.

"The boundaries have been crossed but nothing happens."

Frisk quit refereeing after receiving death threats from Chelsea supporters and the Swede has resisted all attempts to persuade him to return.

Meier received death threats himself after he disallowed a Sol Campbell goal for England against Portugal at Euro 2004.

In a separate interview last week he voiced concerns that a referee might one day be killed if players and coaches continued to whip up hostility.
