Charles Camilleri, who was president of Premier League club Valletta FC for four successive years early at the turn of the new millennium, passed away yesterday, aged 60.
A respected businessman who was honoured with the Gieh Il-Belt Valletta award last year, Camilleri was elected president of the City club in 2003 following the departure of Joe Caruana Curran.
With most of the established players in the team deciding to seek pastures new at the end of a golden era and the club facing financial difficulties, Camilleri had the onerous task to bring stability back to Valletta FC, something he succeeded in doing besides keeping the team competitive and the club planning long-term objectives.
Camilleri left his post in summer of 2007, making way for Victor Sciriha who is still at the helm of the club.
One of the owners of Camilleri Caterers, based in Merchants' Street, Valletta, Camilleri also for some time served as president of the GRTU and of theLa Vallette Philharmonic Society.
His funeral is being held on Monday at 2pm at St Paul's Shipwreck Church in Valletta.
