The government has handed over Fort Delimara to Heritage Malta by through Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg. The fort was built by the British between 1876 and 1888. Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg handed over the keys to the fort to Mario Tabone, Heritage Malta chairman, as part of the government's policy to pass on historic buildings to such organisations to be used for the benefit of the community. The fort will be turned into an attraction for tourists and the public once restored. Heritage Malta has set up a sub-committee to coordinate the rehabilitation work to be carried out at the fort.
