A group of four juniors from the Gordon Asciak Tennis School, recently spent a week's training camp in the prestigious Andres Gimeno Tennis Academy in Barcelona.

The juniors, who all occupy top places in their age groups locally, were Matthew Asciak, Elaine Genovese, Alan Calleja and Zach Muscat.

The Andres Gimeno Tennis Academy has earned a reputation as a pioneer in developing talented tennis players, the likes of Arantxa Sanchez, Alex Corretja, Francisco Clavet and Mary-jo Fernandez. The academy focuses on physical, technical, tactical and psychological programmes aimed at optimising the players' potential.

Training sessions included three hours of tennis and a one-hour physical work-out in the morning. In the afternoon, the Maltese players underwent two hours of tennis technique and match play.

The visit to Barcelona provided the kids with an excellent opportunity to get an idea of what it is like to spend six hours of intensive training daily.

At the end of the week's training camp, the coaches had a lot of praise for the Maltese players and another visit is planned for next year. The juniors were accompanied by their coach Gordon Asciak.
