Four men arrested over string of home burglaries

Two remanded in custody, other two to be arraigned in coming days

Four men have been arrested in connection with a series of burglaries involving a substantial amount of stolen valuables from residential homes.

In a statement on Thursday, the police said that following “intensive investigations” into thefts reported in recent days, police identified two separate groups allegedly involved in the crimes.

The suspects are two Maltese men and two Colombian nationals.

The first arrests were carried out around Noon on Wednesday, when police surrounded and apprehended the two Colombians, aged 26 and 23, in St Paul’s Bay. They were the main suspects in a burglary from a residence in Swieqi.

They were arraigned before Magistrate Abigail Critien on Thursday morning, where they pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded in custody.

On Wednesday at around 5.45pm, two Maltese men, aged 51 and 41, were arrested in Żejtun. They are suspected of carrying out multiple burglaries in Santa Luċija, Żabbar, Xgħajra, Kalkara and Tarxien, the police said.

They are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days.

Police investigations are ongoing.
