Two Yugoslavs who chased two young Maltese men charged with stealing a tourist's bag were themselves accused of damaging a car while giving chase.

The Yugoslavs, Marko Novakovic and Mapko Paic, were remanded in custody after Magistrate Giovanni Grixti heard they had overstayed their visit to Malta.

In a separate arraignment, Timothy Jones, 19, and Joseph Barbara, 21, pleaded not guilty to stealing the bag from a Mellieha beach last week to the detriment of a Danish tourist.

Jones and Barbara were also remanded in custody.

Police Inspectors Yvette Farrugia and Dominic Micallef prosecuted.
