Malta will join other countries in celebrating World Book Day on April 23.
Unesco has designated April 23 as the worldwide celebration of books and reading, an event which is marked in over 30 countries.
The main aim is to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright.
Various activities will take place to encourage the Maltese to read and love books.
One such activity under the auspices of Education Minister Louis Galea is being organised to encourage children to read and also to promote more creative writing, to foster aspiring authors among the young.
The Ministry of Education, in partnership with AgendaBookshops, Bookends, Klabb Kotba Maltin and Midsea Books, will be distributing two book tokens of Lm1 each to all students in Year 4 and Form 1 of government schools and 800 members participating in the Hilti Tezor programme organised by the Foundation for Educational Services.
The tokens will be redeemable at all AgendaBookshop and Bookends outlets in Malta and Gozo. One of the two Lm1 tokens will be redeemed against the purchase of any English language books while the other Lm1 token can be redeemed against the purchase of any Klabb Kotba Maltin Maltese language title.
The participating schools can also profit from the scheme as the school which encourages most of its students to redeem their tokens will itself receive two tokens of Lm100 each, one for English language books and another for Maltese language books.
On redeeming their tokens, students will also be encouraged to take part in a special story-writing competition.
