The Labour Party has expressed solidarity wiht the residents and council of Birzebbuga following the Malta Environment and Planning Authority's decision to allow the extension of the Freeport.
Local government spokesman Stefan Buontempo said the decision would increase inconvenience to residents.
The decision was also condemned by the president for the southern region in the Local Councils Association Claudette Abela Baldacchino.
Both said it would create a multitude of problems for residents, increase the already high level of noise pollution, considerably reduce the buffer zone between the residential zone and the Freeport and ships would be going in closer to shore to the detriment of Pretty Bay users. This bay would also be irreparably damaged with the dredging works that had to be carried out.
Ms Abela Baldacchino said she supported the Birzebbuga council in any decision it might take.
