The Director of the Mediterranean Institute, Dr Simon Mercieca, was invited by the Instituto di Storia dell'Europa Mediterranea CNR of Sardinia to participate in a congress entitled Frontiere del Mediterraneo held in Cagliari from October 10 to 12.
Dr Mercieca read a paper entitled Le Terre di Frontiera del Mediterraneo Centrale erano un mondo sperduto? Il caso di Malta negli anni 1530-1640 in which he discussed the frontiers and territorial barriers in the Central Mediterranean during the 16th century and how political changes of 1530 helped Malta to break away from what Fernand Braudel termed "an isolated world".
In Sardinia Dr Mercieca also attended an international seminar organised by the University of Cagliari on how collaboration between universities and in particular Faculties and Institutes could be enhanced.
As a result of this meeting, it is hoped that the collaboration between the Mediterranean Institute and the Dipartimento di Studi Storici, Geografici e Artistici of the University of Cagliari would be strengthened.
