The Ministry for Economic Services has decided to remove, with immediate effect, the remaining import levy on furniture following a specific request by the Malta Furniture Manufacturers Organisation, subsequently endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Industry.

To this effect, a general levy exemption on all furniture will be published in today's Government Gazzette.

The remaining levy on furniture (equal to 50 per cent of the levy originally applicable before the start of the levy dismantling process) was due to be removed on January 1, 2003.

However, in anticipation of that date and of the expected resultant price reductions, the majority of consumers have effectively been postponing their purchases of furniture items, awaiting the removal of the levy.

The MFMO therefore asked for the remaining levy to be removed earlier.
