Competing in the Cyprus International Triathlon yesterday, brothers Dermot and Keith Galea failed to obtain the Minimum Qualifying Standard of one hour and 56 minutes requested by the Malta Olympic Committee to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, to be held next year in Melbourne, Australia.

The strong winds that characterised the race in Cyprus yesterday had a negative effect on the aspirations of the two Maltese athletes, with Dermot Galea finishing in 2hrs 08mins.

Nonetheless, the serious preparations of both athletes in recent weeks stood them in good stead as Dermot Galea was second overall and his younger brother Keith came in fifth.

The participation of the Maltese triathletes in Cyprus was made possible through the assistance of Emirates Airlines.
