I was surfing the internet the other day and came across the RSPB site and would like to invite everyone to take a look at it.
Listed on the site are countries in southern Europe such as France, Spain, Cyprus, Italy, Greece and Portugal. I urge readers to enter this site to see what illegalities take place in these countries, but most important what the law in those countries allows hunters and trappers to do! You wouldn't believe it. No one mentions these countries and only Malta is considered as the black sheep of the European Union.
In France, hundreds of thousands of finches are caught every year as delicacies. Besides, they can hunt for 64 species of birds while Malta has only two species one can hunt for.
Spain has a derogation from the Birds Directive through which its hunters and trappers can trap migratory birds in autumn and can engage in spring hunting between February and March for wood pigeon! So spring hunting is still legal in some EU countries.
After seeing this site, a question came to mind. Why does no one mention what is being done in other EU countries, and why doesn't the EU take action against them? Is it because of their size - like France and Spain - that they can do anything but Malta must suffer the whims of those who are frustrated because they cannot do anything in their own country?
For those who want to have a clear situation on the hunting issue in other European countries, I suggest they take a look at www.rspb.org.uk/supporting/campaigns/illegalhunting/france.asp.
