Elaine Genovese yesterday beat Russian Yulia Bikchentova to reach the semi-finals of the San Michel U-14 international tournament at the Tennis Club Kordin.
The first set was balanced with Genovese using her powerful forehand drives to the utmost. With the score reading 4-4, Bikchentova was leading the ninth game 40-0 but Genovese hit back strongly to cancel her opponent's lead before going on to win the set 6-4.
That proved to be the turning point of the match as Genovese won a one-sided second set 6-0. She plays Italian Stefania Postorino in the semi-final.
There are three Italian players in the boys' semi-finals. Siringo plays Lago and Zito faces Ukrainian Kushakov.
Maltese pair Alan Calleja and Filippo Mangano reached the semi-finals of the doubles yesterday. Kimberley Cassar and Larissa Schut beat Francesca Franco/Laura Ferrauto 6-0, 7-6 in yesterday's girls' doubles quarter-final.
In the Consolation event, Calleja and Omar Sudzuka clinched a place in the semi-final. Cassar and Brenda Galea reached the second round of the girls' competition.
The tournament comes to an end tomorrow.
