George Best, the former European Footballer of the Year who passed away last week, visited Malta on various occasions.

Perhaps, the most publicised of his stays here was way back in 1967 when the great Manchester United side of Sir Matt Busby played Malta champions Hibernians in the Champions Cup first round.

United had won the first leg at Old Trafford 4-0 but were looking to silence the 23,500 crowd at the Gzira stadium only to be foiled by a slick performance from a battling Hibernians, particularly goalkeeper Freddie Mizzi. In the end, Best and co. had to settle for a 0-0 draw.

Best's funeral will take place in Northern Ireland on Saturday.
