Geotechnical studies to start in Marsascala bay for proposed ferry service
Infrastructure Malta to conduct seabed tests to determine best terminal location
Geotechnical studies will start on Monday in Marsascala bay to identify the best location for a new ferry service from the southern seaside town to Valletta.
Infrastructure Malta announced on Saturday that the geotechnical studies will take place in the Tas-Siberja zone of the bay and will be carried out between Monday August 18 and Saturday August 23.
These geotechnical studies will involve collecting samples from the seabed for analysis, to accurately determine various factors, including the type of material present in the area. The tests will be conducted by a vessel moored in the bay on behalf of Infrastructure Malta.
These preliminary studies form part of a broader technical and environmental process aimed at developing the final plan to identify the most suitable location from which the Tal-Linja bil-Baħar ferry service should operate, connecting Marsascala to Valletta.
The proposed ferry service has been met with criticism and concern from residents and activists who said the service was “unnecessary” and would negatively impact both the bay and the character of the town itself.
Marascala Residents Network said the infrastructure for the terminal “raises serious and legitimate concerns, including increased land traffic, pollution, foreshore occupation and ecological degradation”.
Transport minister Chris Bonett had said the planned terminal was part of a larger project to regenerate Marsascala’s promenade and offer residents an alternative transport solution.
