German soccer fans believe their national side will continue to struggle even after Rudi Voeller is replaced as team coach, according to a survey released yesterday.

Only 32 per cent of Germans said replacing Voeller, who quit last week, would make an improvement, while 59 per cent said it would not enhance their chances of success, the poll showed.

Former Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld is the favourite to succeed Voeller.

At Euro 2004, Germany drew with the Dutch 1-1, despite dominating the match, failed to score against Latvia and were comprehensively beaten by a reserve Czech side.

Voeller was jeered by fans after the Czech match, but the discussion among fans afterwards has recognised the side has a dearth of talent and no reliable striker.
