Ġgantija-inspired monument inaugurated in Xewkija
Encounter is the first of four public artworks planned across Gozo
A monument inspired by the Ġgantija temples has been inaugurated in Triq San Anard, Xewkija
The artwork is one of four planned for public spaces around Gozo, as part of an initiative to enhance the urban environment and provide opportunities for Gozitan artists.
Encounter was created by Gozitan artist Christopher Saliba, a minimalist contemporary sculptor who was inspired by the stones forming part of the Ġgantija temple. He said his work seeks to create a symbolic meeting between Gozo’s past and its present, characterised by innovation and technological development
He added how, through his artwork, he aims to bring people together in the village.
Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri, who inaugurated the artwork, said the initiative followed a call for expressions of interest issued to Gozitan artists to further strengthen the island's public spaces through art and creativity.
"All these works were presented and evaluated not only on their artistic concept, but also on the explanation and the story they carry,” said Camilleri, emphasising how the initiative forms part of a broader vision to further strengthen Gozo as an island of art and culture.
