Għajnsielem hosts celebration in honour of St Cecilia

Tireless efforts of Malta’s band traditions acknowledged

Għajnsielem was the setting for this year’s Gozo celebrations in honour of St Cecilia, the patron saint of music and musicians. An event on Sunday brought together representatives from every band club across Gozo, alongside a delegation from the National Band Clubs Association, led by president Noel Camilleri, secretary Chris Briffa, treasurer Melvin Bugeja, member Therese Micallef and Gozo representative Joe Bajada.

Għajnsielem archpriest Joseph Hili led a commemorative mass at the parish church. He was assisted by Can. Joe Cardona, spiritual director of St Joseph Band of Għajnsielem and Fr Charles Buttigieg, spiritual director of the Ite Ad Joseph Band of Qala. The readings were delivered by St Joseph Band Club officials Alvin Tabone, Shaun Portelli and Roseann Xuereb, while the Lauretana choir was directed by Lelio Spiteri.

In his homily, Fr Hili tied together the significance of the feast of Christ the King, also celebrated on Sunday, with the legacy of St Cecilia. He expressed heartfelt appreciation for the island’s musicians, composers, bandmasters, committee members and volunteers, acknowledging their tireless efforts in keeping Malta’s band tradition alive.

He described Gozo’s band clubs as “cultural pillars” that preserve identity, foster community spirit and spark pride throughout the year.

“Behind every march, concert and festa performance are countless hours of commitment, discipline and teamwork – qualities embodied in the life of St Cecilia herself, a Roman Christian martyr venerated for her devotion and courage,” he said.

Following the church celebration, the St Joseph Band led a spirited march around the village square. The festivities were concluded with a reception, bringing together musicians, officials, families and supporters in a warm community gathering.

The event highlighted the deep-rooted bond that exists between Maltese culture and its musical heritage – an enduring legacy proudly carried forward by Gozo’s dedicated band clubs.
