Gift of Life is a non-political pro-life lobby group. Gift of Life is not in the least interested in turning the issue of elevating the law prohibiting abortion to the Constitution into a political one, simply because we believe that the unborn child is above all political viewpoints and religious beliefs. To condemn our right to speak up as a pro-life lobby group on this matter and our duty to air our views based upon certain public statements made on the issue of abortion and the Constitution is in our opinion an unfair judgment.
Gift of Life is not in the least interested in the political details of the MLP, the AD or the PN. However, we have to work through our political parties to achieve our aims. We simply want our politicians to come together to agree to protect Malta from the threat of abortion being legalised by a single-seat majority in Parliament in the future. Gift of Life will always lobby for this cause and does not feel that condemning us as a group is a fair comment from Jason Micallef. After all, it should be obvious that to politicise this issue dos not in the least help Gift of Life in its mission.
Gift of Life understands how our eagerness to see Malta take this exciting stand to fully protect human life may be interpreted as a forceful attitude by the MLP. We assure the MLP that we do not want to pressure anyone into making decisions and we appreciate the studious attitude and the caution that the MLP is taking towards this proposal. To be fair, the MLP has not had the luxury, as has the PN, of studying and discussing the matter in detail and rightfully the party needs time to discuss the issue properly.
On the other hand, Gift of Life have the right to be concerned because of certain public statements made by the leader of the party in his letter to The Times recently. We are concerned that the issue may not be as critical to the MLP as it is to us and naturally we are wary that the matter may be downgraded in order of priority by the MLP.
We wish to assure all concerned that Gift of Life respects the social stand of the MLP and we sincerely feel that these values are also coherent with those of Gift of Life with regards to the matter of protecting life. We feel confident of the MLP's ability to make an informed decision on this proposal as we feel that this matter falls well within the beliefs of the party, which has worked to defend the weak. We fully understand that the MLP needs time to digest the proposal, and rightly so.
This is acceptable to us, as long as the issue is not downgraded or in some way put aside.
It makes no difference to Gift of Life whether our proposal was initially carried by the MLP or the PN in the first place. What we are solely concerned about is the tying up of the dangerous loose-end in our system, which we wish to see all our politicians united in dealing with.
Therefore, we apologise if in any way we seemed to have placed undue pressure on the MLP as this was far from our intention. And at the same time we ask all men and women of goodwill in Malta to work together for this proposal, that seeks to protect the unborn child in its mother's womb better from the possibility of abortion one day being easily introduced by a one-seat majority vote in our Parliament.
