Malta's Darren Gilford placed fifth in the second heat of the 100 metres event held yesterday morning.

The Maltese sprinter was just over a tenth of a second outside his national record of 10.55 when he clocked 10.67 at the Athens Olympic Stadium.

The Pembroke runner finished behind winner Mark Lewis-Francis of Great Britain, who stopped the watch at 10.13 - his best time of the season, Ghana's Aziz Zakari, 10.19, Roland Nemeth of Hungary, 10.28, and Mubarak Salem Al Yami of Saudi Arabia, 10.36. Khalil Al Hanahneh of Jordan (10.76) and Kakianako Nariki of Kiribati (11.62) finished sixth and seventh respectively. Trinidad and Tobago's Marc Burns was disqualified from the heat for a false start.

Lewis-Francis, Zakari and Nemeth made it to the second round of the 100m.
