International human rights lawyer to speak in Malta

Nomi Bar-Yaacov to deliver Mabel Strickland Memorial Lecture on May 4

Is truth the first casualty of war? What reporting from Ukraine, Gaza or Iran can be trusted?

Nomi Bar-Yaacov has spent decades thinking deeply about some of the world’s most important conflicts and will be sharing some insights from her work at this year’s Mabel Strickland Memorial Lecture.

A renowned international lawyer, negotiator and mediator, Bar-Yaacov will deliver a talk titled “Freedom of the Press in these Challenging Times: What does the future hold?” on May 4 at 4pm at the Casino Maltese in Valletta.

Bar-Yaacov specialises in high-stakes, back-channel negotiations with a particular focus on the Middle East. She is a leading commentator on Middle Eastern affairs, appearing regularly on BBC, Sky News, France 24, Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera, among others.

She advises corporations and senior company executives on negotiation tactics and teaches negotiation, communication and leadership at various diplomatic academies.

Her previous roles include serving as speechwriter and associate spokesperson for then United Nations Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, as well as political adviser in the UN Executive Office covering Security Council matters.

She previously led the Middle East and conflict management programs at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. She serves as a fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy, among many other posts she holds.

Her lecture will be followed by a short interview conducted by Times of Malta online editor Bertrand Borg. She will then take questions from the floor.

The Mabel Strickland Memorial Lecture is organised by The Strickland Foundation in collaboration with Każin Malti. The foundation was established by Mabel Strickland, the founder and first editor of Times of Malta, with the objective of promoting democracy, respect for human rights and a free press.
