Alternattiva Demokratika welcomed the decision of an EU regulatory committee to reject the marketing of a type of genetically modified sweetcorn and reiterated its call to the Maltese government to declare Malta a GMO-free zone.

AD noted that last Saturday the minister for the environment and rural affairs, George Pullicino said that the government has set up a bio-safety coordinating committee which should lead to the formulation of a national policy on the issue and that the government's policy on genetically modified organisms would be financed by the European Union.

In the light of this declaration, AD is proposing that a GMO-free zone should be declared around the Maltese islands with the sea as a natural buffer.
