Repairs a on a GO submarine cable damaged on December 18 have now been completed.
"As a result of this development and following the full commissioning of GO’s new second cable to Sicily in record time on 23 December 2008, GO is now fully operating both its submarine cables for Internet bandwidth connectivity, international voice and leased line services," the company said.
GO is the only communications company in Malta that owns and operates two international fibre-optic links to Europe, in addition to the added redundancy available via the GO-Vodafone contingency agreement.
GO said the availability of these two cables meant it could cater for the increasing demand for IP bandwidth and provide added resiliency, security and backup.
Repair works on the severed cable, linking Malta to Catania, started earlier this month and were completed by the cable-ship Teliri owned by Elettra, the same vessel that in December laid GO’s second cable linking St Paul’s Bay to Mazara Del Vallo in Sicily.
The Teliri was also involved in the repair of the other cables, owned by other international operators, that were also damaged in the Mediterranean area on 18 December.
