The uncertainty facing Go employees has forced the union representing 40 employees with a degree to become an affiliate of the General Workers' Union, which represents the majority of the company's employees.

The Union Gradwati Maltacom (UGM), which had decided to stick to the company's old name after it was bought out, is the second organisation to join the GWU as affiliates. The association representing white taxis joined last December.

UGM president Joe Agius said Go employees were going through a rough patch due to uncertainty over the future of their jobs. He said that by becoming GWU affiliates their interests could be better protected.

GWU general secretary Tony Zarb said the union was proud that the UGM wanted to join as its affiliate.

It was demonstrating its vision on how trade unions could work closely together in the best interest of workers.

He said the GWU had seen a substantial rise in membership since it began its campaign informing people of the advantages of having a union representing workers at the workplace.

He said the union was open to everyone, not only individual workers but also other organisations.

The UGM previously formed part of the Confederation of Maltese Trade Unions.

When contacted, CMTU president William Portelli said the UGM but had not attended meetings for years and had also not paid its membership dues. He said UGM never had any issues with the CMTU and neither had it ever resigned from being an affiliate member.

Asked whether this departure would affect the confederation, Mr Portelli replied in the negative, adding that the CMTU was in the process of a revamp.
