For the fourth consecutive year Go Mobile is to support the Malta Volleyball Marathon - by far one of Malta's strongest and long-standing community investments from a local company. The 19th Go Mobile Malta Volleyball Marathon, organised by the Kerygma Movement through the National Campaign Solidarity through Sports, will be held from August 9 to 19 at the trade fair grounds in Naxxar.
In total, 242 hours of volleyball will be played with the aim of raising funds for three causes - Id-Dar tal-Providenza in Siggiewi, Lourdes Home in Gozo and the Ursuline Sisters Creche in Sliema.
Details of this year's marathon were announced on Tuesday at Go Mobile's head office in Marsa. Go Mobile chief executive officer Professor Juanito Camilleri said: "Go Mobile believes that it has an important role to play in promoting solidarity and sports. We look forward to yet another successful event which will surely make a difference for thousands of people who are in need."
Dr George Abela, chairman of the National Campaign Solidarity through Sports, reiterated his gratitude for Go Mobile's commendable, constant support. He said this year's marathon will raise awareness about environmental issues: "This year's theme is 'Our Environment: Let's Preserve it'. We believe that an event such as the Go Mobile Malta Volleyball Marathon can do more than raise money for the needy. It can also promote issues that are relevant to Maltese society."
Last year a record Lm235,274 were raised, following 241 hours of volleyball. Fr Charles Fenech, director of the Kerygma Movement, said over 2,000 volunteers will be dedicating their time in the middle of summer with the sole purpose of helping those in need.
"While always hoping that the sum of money collected will surpass last year's amount, we believe that the marathon serves other purposes," he said. "The main ideal which has motivated the Kerygma Movement during the past 19 years has always been to inspire and instil motivation in hundreds of people, especially adolescents and the young, in spite of the sacrifices involved, to offer their talents, time and abilities to respond joyfully to urgent appeals for help."
