GO customers in southern and central localities experienced outages after a fibre cut affected the telecommunication company’s services to the area.

The operator said damage to its fibre infrastructure by a third party had affected "multiple services", primarily in towns in Malta's south.

Most services had been restored by 1.15pm, the company said, with all repairs expected to be completed by 8pm.

"The fact that there are consistently numerous ongoing developments means that our infrastructure is at constant risk of damage. We undertake every effort to ensure that our infrastructure is adequately marked to prevent such incidents," GO said.

"It is also unfortunate that despite prior agreements, such contractors do not always honour the agreed plans. The consequences are significant, both for us as the service provider, as well as for you, our esteemed customers. We will be taking action.
