Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi insisted yesterday that a vote for Nationalist Party candidates in Saturday's European Parliament election would mean a vote for people who knew what they had to do for Malta to seize all the opportunities of EU membership.
Dr Gonzi was speaking at a press conference in Gozo.
He said the Maltese people were already enjoying some of the benefits of EU membership, including wider consumer choice and a reduction in the price of several products. Businesses were seeing less red tape while importers had better cashflow as VAT on imports was now charged at the point of sale.
Dr Gonzi pointed out that the EP elections would not be held had the Nationalist government not taken Malta into the EU.
Gozo, he said, was enjoying other benefits of EU membership, including the closure of the waste dump at Qortin. It was also receiving funds to improve its infrastructure and economy, including tourism and handcrafts.
