In this election campaign, Labour keeps harping that if people vote for Lawrence Gonzi they will inevitably get the old hats of his party. Likewise (albeit on a minor tone), the PN say a vote for Alfred Sant will mean a vote for his vintage buddies.

This is cheap campaigning. Our electoral system gives us the privilege to elect the individuals we vote for directly.

But ultimately the choice is between Dr Gonzi and Dr Sant. As party leaders they are the only names (supposedly) guaranteed to be elected. They will be responsible for implementing their electoral programme once in Castille. Theirs will be the prerogative to appoint the various ministers from the crop the people would have chosen. Their vision is all-important. No matter how both parties put it, our choice lies between Dr Gonzi and Dr Sant.
