Malta has been ranked 11th among 163 countries in the preliminary results of an environmental performance index (EPI).
The study was carried out by the Yale and Columbia universities in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
The 2010 EPI ranks 163 countries on 25 performance indicators tracked across 10 policy categories covering environmental public health and ecosystem vitality.
These indicators provide a gauge at a national government scale of how close countries are to established environmental policy goals.
Developed countries with sufficient financial resources, a commitment to environmental management and sophisticated policy systems make up a large portion of top performers with European countries constituting more than half of the countries ranked in the top 30.
Iceland ranked highest, with a score of 93.5, followed by Switzerland (89.1), Costa Rica (86.4), Sweden (86.1) and Norway (81.1). The other countries with a score higher than Malta’s are Mauritius, France, Austria, Cuba and Colombia.
Malta ranked 11th with a score of 76.3.
The countries with the worst environmental performance are Sierra Leone (32.1), the Central African Republic (33.3), Mauritania (33.7), Angola (36.4) and Togo (36.4).
