The government has agreed to give extra once-only compensation for the cost of living to some 60,000 low income families, the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development has been informed.

The compensation, which is expected to cost the government some €2 million, follows a study by the economics unit with the Ministry of Finance and is meant to compensate for several financial burdens, notably fuel costs.

Details on the amount of payment and eligibility for it, are expected to be announced later this month.

GWU Secretary-General Tony Zarb, who attended the MCESD meeting, said his union wanted the compensation to be  extended to a wider segment of families, encompassing those with a medium income.
