Government, GWU bridge differences over shipyards

The construction and metal workers' section of the General Workers Union yesterday announced agreement with the government over the definition of three primary clauses in the new collective agreement for Malta Shipyards workers.

The union said the agreement was reached during talks between the section's administration, including secretary Alfred Cassar, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and the shipyards' management.

The union said it had been agreed that the definition of "confined spaces" would be the same as that given internationally.

The agreement also provides for the opening of the pharmacy at the Cospicua 'yard at all times when there are industrial workers at their job, while a doctor would be on duty throughout the day. At the Marsa shipyard there will be a state registered nurse throughout the day and the pharmacy will be open at times when there are industrial workers.

The agreement also stipulates that box racks and other places used by the workers will be cleaned regularly.

The union said the three clauses had been the source of misunderstanding between the section and the management.
