Opposition Home Affairs spokesman Gavin Gulia has urged the government to look into the reasons which led to an uprising by illegal immigrants held in detention at police headquarters, followed by the escape of 54 of them last week.

He said the government should also establish all the facts and circumstances behind the detention of the migrants and the delays in the processing of their applications for refugee status.

The government also needed to implement solutions with regard to those migrants whose identity and circumstances were not clear.

Dr Gulia said the government had not created the problem of illegal migrants but unless it acted to tackle the problem, then the problem would become its own.
