A malfunctioning system component caused a shutdown of government web services this morning, but most services were restored by 3.50 pm., a spokesman for MITA, the government's IT agency, said this afternoon.

The fault developed at about 10.35 a.m, and affected websites hosted by MITA and government e-mail services.

MITA had to suspend all e-government services as a precautionary measure to ensure full diagnosis of the technical fault.

Services started being restored at about 2.30 p.m.

The spokesman stressed that the fault was not a security issue.

"MITA is currently liaising with Microsoft and will shortly be running a number of monitoring tools to ensure that the system performance is stable and healthy. It will also be running a specific tool able to benchmark the system configuration and provide a detailed report highlighting aspects which may be enhanced, if any."

The spokesman said that MITA apologised to its clients for the inconvenience caused by the interruption of service.
