When most governments in EU member states are debating their untenable deficits and national debts, their soaring unemployment, taxation rates and their wage and pensions freezes, here in Malta we are getting hot under the collar over the possibility of having a retractable roof placed in an open-air theatre.
It might be a great idea to have one (I personally think it is a good idea and may be the compromise needed in this case) but please let's get our priorities right!
The government is focusing on keeping our deficit, our national debt and our unemployment rate, the sixth best in the EU, on the low side.
It is directing all its energy towards safeguarding and generating jobs and offering timely financial assistance, tax reductions, tax rebates and tax holidays to enterprises and individuals who really need it.
Malta's finances are on a sou-nd footing.
We are moving in the right direction and we must continue working closely together if we are to achieve excellence in all fields.
