A Gozitan was jailed for eight months and fined €500 after he was found guilty of trafficking heroin, being in possession of the drug in circumstances which denoted it was not for his exclusive use, and being in possession of codeine.

Raymond Rotin, 39, of Gharb, a first time offender, did not testify.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera took into consideration that Mr Rotin was caught in the act passing on a packet with the drugs to a woman in Xlendi.

The woman also confirmed she had bought from Mr Rotin another time.

Fr Manuel Cordina testified confirmed that the accused had a drug problem and that he had tried to help him.
